How is Cotswold Teak's furniture sourced?

How is Cotswold Teak's furniture sourced?

All the teak wood that is used to make our handmade furniture has been ethically sourced and is fully compliant with the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT).

Teak logging is allowed only in sustainably managed teak plantations. These plantations are controlled by the Government, which allows the export of the timber only to companies that hold certification directly from the Government.

What does this mean?

Between 2007 and 2011, Indonesia and the EU negotiated a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) to promote trade in legal timber products and improve forest governance. The VPA process provided significant opportunities to improve the SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu) – translated, the SVLK assurance scheme is a mandatory system that requires all timber from state-owned and private forests to obtain verification of legality – as a guarantee that the timber originates from legal, sustainably-managed sources.

How is the teak sourced?

All our teak is legally sourced from Government forest plantations in Indonesia. The Ministry of Forest supervises these regulations.

What is ‘plantation teak’?

Plantation teak is considered a renewable resource, as it is harvested and managed to produce a sustainable supply. Plantation teak means that jungle-grown or ‘old growth’ teak is left in the jungle, without disturbance. It also means that the wildlife in the jungle is left in piece. It’s the most legal and sustainable way to source teak.

Do the trees get replanted?

Every tree that has been cut down is replaced, which
means that the carbon sequestration or removal of carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere is uninterrupted and helps to preserve biodiversity, because a part
of the plantation is typically left intact in order to provide a habitat to
wildlife and secondly, a sustainable source of timber eliminates the need for
logging in old-growth forests which in turn keeps the natural wildlife habitat
virtually intact.
